Problem Solving – Pentominoes

pentominoes

(1) First Challenge.

Use this pentomino grid to make as many different arrangements of 5 squares as you can.

The squares must touch full edge to full edge and not any other way.

To be different, they must be different no matter how you flip or rotate them.

How many can you find?

(2) Second Challenge.

Now, try fit them all onto the 10×6 grid.

(3) Third Challenge.

Can you fit them onto a 5 x 12, or or 4 x 15, or 3 x 20 grid?

Or, there are 2339 ways to fit the pieces in the 10 x 6 grid – can you find 3 other solutions?

(4) Final Challenge.

How many different arrangements can you make using:

(a) 3 squares (b) 4 squares?

(5) Homework: Present your findings. Due next Monday.
